Jean Batchelder delights in nature's magnificence, spending most weekends hiking, backpacking, or snowshoeing in the mountains and canyon country - always with her camera and watercolor field kit. She draws inspiration from Aristotle, "In all things of nature, there is something of the marvelous."

Jean's work is all about her response to nature, whether a misty sunrise or a flaming sunset, a miniscule alpine flower or a gigantic peony, a rocky cliff or a cascading waterfall or a sandy wash. She captures her impressions in watercolor, eager to share her joy with others. She defines her style as interpretative realism, integrating light and color to draw the viewer into the heart of the painting.

A Hallmark scholar in the 60s, Jean deferred her art career while raising her family. Since the late 70s, she has developed a flourishing career in the facilities planning and management profession, owning her nationally acclaimed consulting business Access by Design LLC since 1990.

In early 2000, her husband rekindled her love of painting with a birthday gift of a watercolor class. Now semi-retired, her primary focus is expanding her artistic endeavors. She began entering juried members' association shows in 2002 and sold two paintings at her first show! To her astonished delight, her initial entry in an open show was awarded first place for watercolor.
