Update:

I was privileged to spend the last two weeks of August in upstate Michigan, along the Lake Michigan Coast.
One week was in Harbor Springs, attending a watercolor workshop by internationally-acclaimed artist and instructor Cheng-Khee Chee.
Cheng-Khee has developed five approaches which synthesize Eastern and Western styles of watercolor painting. Each day of the workshop focused on one of these unique approaches.
I learned a great deal, had tons of fun, and met 18 talented artists.
So far, I've completed four paintings from the workshop and am sharing them with you now.

Traditional Method
The first day Cheng-Khee demonstrated traditional Chinese watercolor. We students painted a subject of our choosing, using our own typical approach. Cheng-Khee spent the afternoon getting to know each of us, analyzing our personal styles, and helping us with our paintings. The River's Journey: The Beginning is of Poudre Lake and is part of my Cache la Poudre series.

Saturated Wet Technique

This method entails saturating the watercolor paper with water and covering the sheet with bold pigment, then lifting out the pigment to develop white or light-colored details. I love this method and love Mariposa Lilies, so I chose Complex Simplicity: Mariposa Lily for the day's exercise.

Improvisational Approach
Not much preplanning, just treating illustration board with acrylic gel medium, then painting the cliffs on the treated areas. The water in Waterfall No. 1 is the only area that was not 'primed' with the gel medium.

Crinkling Technique
Wetting & crinkling Masa paper (sized Japanese rice paper), then painting a scene on the wet paper lends itself nicely to trees. Changing Seasons is a little-used trail in Rocky Mountain National Park.
